Oranges
Why You Still Feel Overlooked
(Even When You’re Doing Everything Right)
It was never about the oranges.
You’re doing everything right…
So why does it still feel like no one sees you?
You show up.
You carry the load.
You handle what needs to be done—at home, in your business, in your life.
And yet… something feels off.
Like you’re giving everything…
and still somehow invisible.
If that hits a little close to home, this story is for you.
The Parable of the Oranges.
There was a young man with big ambitions. He wanted to work for a company that paid well and carried prestige. He prepared his résumé carefully, went through several interviews, and eventually landed an entry-level position.
From day one, his eyes were on the next rung of the ladder.
He worked hard.
He came in early.
He stayed late.
He made sure the boss noticed.
Five years passed. When a supervisor position finally opened, he felt confident it would be his.
But to his shock, the promotion went to another employee—someone who had only been with the company for six months.
Angry and confused, the young man marched into his boss’s office and demanded an explanation.
The boss listened quietly, then said,
“Before I answer you, would you do a favor for me?”
“Yes, of course,” the young man replied.
“Would you go to the store and buy some oranges? My wife needs them.”
The young man agreed and returned shortly with a bag of oranges.
The boss asked, “What kind of oranges did you buy?”
“I don’t know,” the young man said. “You asked me to buy oranges. These are oranges.”
“How much did they cost?”
“I’m not sure. You gave me $30. Here’s the receipt and the change.”
“Thank you,” the boss said. “Please sit down.”
Then the boss called in the employee who had received the promotion and gave him the same request.
The second employee gladly went to the store.
When he returned, the boss asked the same questions.
“What kind of oranges did you buy?”
“Well,” he replied, “there were many kinds—navel, Valencia, blood oranges, tangerines. I wasn’t sure which to choose, so I called your wife. She told me she was hosting a party and needed oranges for juice.”
“So I asked the grocer which oranges made the best juice. He recommended Valencia oranges. I also dropped them off at your home on my way back—your wife was very pleased.”
The boss nodded. “And the cost?”
“I wasn’t sure how many to buy, so I called your wife again to ask how many guests she was expecting. Then I asked the grocer how many oranges would be needed and whether there was a quantity discount. I saved some money. Here’s the receipt and the change.”
The boss smiled.
“Thank you. You may go.”
The first young man, who had been watching quietly, stood up, shoulders slumped.
“I see what you mean,” he said—and walked out.
It Was Never About the Oranges
Both men completed the task.
Both followed instructions.
But only one showed real intent.
The first was focused on doing the job.
The second was focused on understanding the outcome.
The first checked the box.
The second took ownership.
And that difference?
It changes everything.
Where This Shows Up in Your Life
This isn’t just a workplace story.
This shows up everywhere.
On the ranch.
In your home.
In your health.
In your relationships.
I see it all the time—hardworking women doing everything “right”…
✔ Taking care of everyone else
✔ Showing up where they’re needed
✔ Pushing through exhaustion
✔ Holding it all together
And still feeling unseen.
Still feeling undervalued.
Still wondering why nothing really changes.
Here’s the Truth Most People Miss
You’re not stuck because you’re not doing enough.
You’re stuck because somewhere along the way…
you got disconnected from your own intent.
You’ve been responding. Reacting. Managing. Carrying.
But not always choosing.
And after a while, that starts to feel like being invisible in your own life.
Not because you don’t matter…
But because you stopped being part of the equation.
The Shift That Changes Everything
This is where things begin to change.
Not with more effort.
Not with another to-do list.
But with clarity.
Clarity on:
What actually matters to you
Where you’re showing up out of obligation instead of intention
How you want to feel in your life—not just what needs to get done
Because when you shift from busy to intentional…
everything starts to realign.
An Invitation for You
Most people read something like this, nod their head… and change nothing.
But if something in this stirred something deeper in you—
that’s worth paying attention to.
You don’t have to keep running on empty.
You don’t have to keep carrying everything alone.
I invite you, my friend, to book a Coaching Conversation.
Not to add more to your plate…
but to finally step back, get clear, and uncover what’s really been keeping you stuck.
